On February 16, 2010, a public information meeting was held to get public input into Markham’s strategy to manage population and employment growth over the next 20 years. More than 1,000 people attended the February 16 meeting to discuss the future of Markham and how we should grow.
Approximately 80 residents and stakeholders signed up to speak at the meeting. After five hours of presentations and deputations, Council made the decision to continue the meeting on February 17 to ensure everyone on the speaker’s list had an opportunity to be heard.
All public is welcome to attend. However, only individuals who were registered to speak at the February 16 meeting, but were unable to do so because of time, will be allowed to make presentations. No new speakers will be accepted. Written submissions can still be made to growth@markham.ca.

Meeting Handout (334k/4p) Growth options information. (UPDATED) |
Background - Markham's 3 Growth Options
Join us to hear about our options for sustainable community growth, and to share your ideas on how Markham should grow.
- Staff Preferred Growth Option
- Moderate increase in medium and high density housing (e.g., townhouses, multi-storey buildings)
- More compact, mixed use developments (e.g., housing with retail, office or cultural space)
- Integrate growth with the proposed Greenway System, protecting natural heritage and reserving agricultural lands, with only a modest expansion of the urban boundary
- Continues to provide a variety of housing and employment choices
- York Region’s Proposal
- Similar to Markham Staff ’s preferred option, accommodating growth through intensification in existing areas and a modest expansion of the urban boundary
- Includes a slightly different housing mix
- No Urban Boundary Expansion Option
- Residential and employment growth accommodated completely within
existing urban boundary through high density development – no outward growth
- Accommodates proposed Greenway System and reserves additional lands for agriculture, possibly on a permanent basis (agricultural preserve)
All options address Provincial and Regional growth management requirements.
