Markham embraces Ontario's new GTA transit initiatives
Markham, ON ~ Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti enthusiastically welcomed today's Ontario government announcement of their $17.5 billion investment in a rapid transit action plan for the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton.
"This is wonderful news," said Mayor Scarpitti who was Municipal Chair of the recent Ontario Places to Grow Summit where he called for accelerated implementation of an integrated transportation and transit system for the GTA. "This is a major investment in the well-being of the Greater Toronto Area – particularly for the "905 communities" such as Markham. Not only will it ensure a healthy economic future, but it will also result in a healthier environment by taking people out of their cars and into a more environmentally friendly rapid transit system. I'm delighted that the Premier has responded so positively to our need for a more effective and sustainable transportation solution. I congratulate the Ontario government for making a bold decision that means so much for the future of Markham and other communities like ours."
Deputy Mayor and York Regional Councillor Jim Jones, an energetic long-time advocate of an integrated transit system for the Region and the extension of the Yonge Street subway, also welcomed the news. "This announcement will certainly be recognized as a key turning point in the history of the GTA. The ability for people to move quickly and economically throughout the area will link an entire network of communities, resulting in greater economic strength and a brighter future for all." "Premier McGuinty really gets it!" commented Mayor Scarpitti. "Gridlock is the main issue facing the GTA. This 12-year commitment will have major positive impact on the future of our communities."
The Town of Markham, with a population of about 270,000 is one of Canada's fastest-growing, most diverse communities and is home to many of the country's leading technology businesses.
