The Suppression Division of Markham Fire and Emergency Services is what people envision when they hear the words Fire Department or firefighter. We are the 200 men and women who staff the fire stations on a 24/7 basis.
We are highly motivated to perform in a caring sensitive manner and respond to our customers needs which may be anything from a fully involved structure fire, motor vehicle collision, medicals emergency or the learn not burn program conducted in our elementary schools.
The Suppression Division operates 9 front run apparatus, 2-105’ Aerial Ladders and 7 pumpers out of 7 stations. We also deploy 2 Command Officers, a District Chief and Platoon Chief. As well as the 9 front run apparatus we have 3 spares, 1 Tanker and 1 Personnel Carrier that can be placed in service by on-duty staff.

Communications Division
The Markham Fire and Emergency Services Communications Division operates out of our Alarm Room located in Fire Station 95 in Unionville.
The staff assigned to that division receive calls for emergency assistance through the province wide 9-1-1 telephone system on 24 hour/seven day per week basis.
On receipt of those calls, using our Computer Aided Dispatch system, our dispatchers evaluate the information taken from the public and determine the closest trucks and the most appropriate number of trucks to send.
Once the fire trucks are dispatched the alarm room operators support the fire crews on scene with back-up communications support and coordination with other emergency service agencies such as the Police and Ambulance.
Emergency calls ranging from simple calls for local assistance such as occupants being locked out to multiple alarm structure fires are handled through this facility. Our Alarm Room also provides a 24 hour emergency call answering service for other Town Departments such as Water Works and Road Operations.
Mechanical Division
The Mechanical division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all of our vehicles, from the smallest prevention car to the 70,000 pound aerial ladder. As well as routine maintenance they coordinate and/or perform annual pump and ladder testing, PMCVI inspections of the pumpers and aerials. The division has 2 fully qualified mechanics as well as a handyperson assigned and work under the supervision of the corporate fleet supervisor at the Miller Ave operations centre. Both of our mechanics continue to take courses to stay abreast of the new technology in vehicles.
