Building Inspections - FAQs

Welcome to the Town of Markham's frequently asked questions webpage. Intended for clients with Building Permits issued by the Town of Markham, this site was designed to provide a simple and effective way to find answers to any building inspection questions pertaining to residential (low – rise) construction. Our goal is to provide optimal service to our customers while still maintaining the highest level of customer satisfaction.

Don't see your question listed here? Send us your questions along with your Building Permit number and construction information to buildinginspection-info@markham.ca. Please note that depending on the nature and complexity of the question kindly allow us a minimum of 48 hrs to respond.

Q: A permit was obtained and construction has started, how do I schedule an inspection?
   
A:

You may request an inspection anytime, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, using our automated Permit Inspection Request Line (PIRL). Using a touch tone phone call PIRL at 905-475-4850. A recording will ask for the following information in the sequence shown. For prompts, please press the # key on your telephone pad.

  1. Building permit number.
  2. Inspection code (found on your Building Permit Card)
  3. Date inspection is required.
  4. A.M. or P.M. time (where scheduling allows)
  5. Contact name and telephone number.

Q: At what construction stages do I need an inspection?
   
A:

When a building permit is issued by the Town of Markham, a list of mandatory inspections required during the construction stage is outlined in the package provided by the building department with the issuance of the building permit. (I.e. A Framing & Heating rough-in Inspection should be requested prior to the installation of insulation and upon completion of all plumbing and electrical rough-in) Required inspections are also listed on the bottom half of the permit. Q: Why are scheduled inspections mandatory?
   
A: By Provincial law, prescribed scheduled inspections are required to ensure continuous compliance with the Ontario Building Code. By scheduling mandatory inspections our Building Inspectors are able to work closely with Builders and homeowners ensuring Building Code compliant work.

Q: How do I cancel my inspection request?
   
A:

Cancelling an inspection request can be done via phone.

  • Call the Permit Inspection Request Line (PIRL) at 905-475-4850 and press 2 from the main menu. You will need your permit number, and inspection code.

Q: What should I do if I forget to schedule an inspection?
   
A: If you have forgotten to schedule an inspection get in touch immediately with the inspector. He / She will have to assess the urgency of your situation and will arrange a time to come out to the site to inspect based on their availability.

Q: Who is the inspector for my area and how can he/she be reached?
   
A:

Inspectors are assigned according to geographical area, inspection type and the type of construction being undertaken. (I.e. Housing, Industrial, Commercial or Institutional). Please contact the Building Inspection Department at 905-477-7000 ext. 2189.
