The following homebuilders received Markham's Building Excellence Award in 2009. The award is based on a new homebuilders construction record within the Town of Markham for the year 2008. Recipients must score an average of 95% to qualify. This is the fifth year that inspection data was collected using our mobile computer software.

What are the Town of Markham Building Excellence Awards?

The Building Excellence Awards are presented to new homebuilders that demonstrate compliance with the Building Code Regulations and the Building Code Act.

What is the purpose?

• Improve feedback to our clients,
• Identify high and low performers among our clients,
• Enable effective performance measurement of regulatory services
• Adjust levels and scope of service to suit client performance

Markham believes in focusing enforcement efforts on those clients who repeatedly violate the Building Code. This can only be done effectively through consistent business rules based on valid deficiency information. By offering compliant clients a competitive advantage over the lower performers, there will be an incentive for improvement. It is important to document the incidence of building code or related bylaw violation.

Who is eligible to win?

Builders of new homes in Markham are eligible to for the Building Excellence Award. Homebuilders are selected in 2 categories: Small Volume (5-24 dwelling units), Large Volume (24+ dwelling units).

What criteria are used to evaluate a new homebuilder?

• Number of dwelling units constructed
• Building permits obtained prior to starting construction
• Mandatory inspections requested by the builder and performed by the inspector
• Registration with Tarion Warranty Corporation and ZERO claims or chargeable conciliations filed against the builder
• Number of inspections that required more then two visits to achieve compliance with the Ontario Building Code:
• Number of inspections requested by the builder that were ready when inspector arrived at the job site
• Dwelling units occupied with Town approval
• Number of inspections completed
• Percentage of new home construction inspected by building inspectors
