Summer Art Classes
When you take an art course at the Varley Art Gallery you learn from some of the area's most talented instructors and artists who teach a variety of media & genres. Classes range from photography to drawing for the absolute beginner to hand-built pottery.

To register for Summer Art Classes follow any of the 4 ways to register below.
In the fall we will be offering our full range of adult programs including beginner classes in watercolour, acrylic, oil, mixed media and collage, drawing, hand-built pottery and photography. Program and registration information about our fall programs will appear online and in the Markham Life guide at the end of July, and registration will start on August 18.

Life Drawing Intensive
This summer, professional artist and educator Neville Clarke will lead this class for the intermediate Life Drawing student twice a week for a lengthened time period. This will
give students the opportunity to work more intensively on their skills in a shorter period
of time, working on more complex poses, techniques and studies. Please note that
classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Weeks 1 and 2 and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays Week 3 only. No materials provided. Model fee of $80 (cash) payable to
the instructor on the first day of classes.

Sketch, Paint, Print, Collage It!
Instructed by artist Judith Livingston, participants will select their outdoor site on the
grounds of The McKay Art Centre. This site is used as their subject matter each week as the reference for four artistic disciplines. Week 1: sketching - pencil, pen or pencil crayons
or combination,Week 2: Painting - acrylic, watercolour (paints, crayons or pencils) or combination (no oils), Week 3: Print-making - frottage, off-set or combination, Week

Art in Motion
A new approach to wet-on-wet watercolour painting by art professional Janet
Hendershot! The 4 week class will explore movement through space using beanbags,
balls and copper rods. These movements will then be the inspiraration to put brush to
paper! The paintings may encapass the movements of the body or of the beanbags.
Summer is a time to unleash your creativity and in this unconventional class, you will
surely do so! Paintings, by nature of the approach, will usually be abstract. Classes are
held at the McKay Art Centre and the movement portion will take place in the back

Varley Portraits into the Light
To further the gallery's goal to highlight the importance of portraiture in Canadian art, students will be given a chance to examine in more detail this historic and a selection of Varley portraits. Learn the foundations of portraiture and experiment with a variety of drawing and painting materials (no oil paints). With the emphasis on colour, perspective
and design students will work on different methods from still life and photographs, to
mirrors (for self-portraits) and a live model to sharpen their ability to capture likeness.
This class is suitable for absolute beginners, and is open to a limited number of students.
A nominal fee of $10 (cash) covering the expense for a live model for selected session(s)
must be paid instructor on the first day of classes. Materials not included. (4 weeks,

Introduction to Acrylics for Teens
Teens will be introduced to the possibilities of painting with acrylics, learning techniques, colour and composition, exploring new subjects from observation, imagination, and from art history and the Varley Art Gallery's collection. Students will paint on canvas, paper and wood, developing a sense of confidence in handling a new medium. Some materials provided. (4 weeks, 16 hours) A full list of supplies will be provided on the first day of classes.

| Teaching Staff at the Varley |
Glenn Bernabe
Graduate of OCAD, a signature member of The Pastel Artists Canada as well as a local member of The Markham Group of Artists. He has received Honourable Mention and Best in Show in several regional and nationwide juried competitions. In 2003, He made the top 100 in the Pastel Journal Magazine's Pastel 100 Annual International Juried Competition. Also, he has taught many classes and workshops in drawing and pastel arts in various institutions.
Janet Hendershot
Graduate from York University in Fine Arts. She has represented Canada abroad and received numerous Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council grants. Janet is also a member of the Ontario College of Teachers and Vice President of the Ontario Society of Artists.
Judith Livingston
An exhibiting artist, is a graduate of Ontario Teacher's College, and elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. She brings her skills, as a teacher and artist, to the workshops providing students with a structured, informative and enjoyable voyage into their next artistic venture.
Neville Clarke
Born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1959, Neville Clarke is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design. Neville’s watercolours are remarkable for their technical achievement and eloquent voice. Neville has had a numerous solo and group exhibitions during his artistic career and he currently instructs art at Centennial College.
